We value our new members and are anxious for you to feel at home. Sometimes we forget how it felt to be new to the Guild. Please ask questions when we get going too fast and forget to explain something. Until you learn our language, here are some terms you may hear. If there are others please let us know and we will add them to our list for the benefit of all.
A-Night – is a regular meeting on the second Wednesday of each month in which the business of the Guild is discussed. There is always Show and Tell and sometimes we have guest speakers, mini-workshops or demos.
B-Night – is the second regular meeting held on the fourth Wednesday of each month. This is a social night for working on your own projects - this can be an opportunity to get your quilt sandwiched! We may also have mini-workshops, demos or some other fun thing to do.
Block of the Month – each month, at the A-Night meeting, a quilt block pattern is given out to anyone wishing to participate (may also be emailed or found on the website under Block of the Month). Members have one month to complete the block. It is handed in at the next A-Night meeting and your name is entered in a draw for all of the blocks that are made that month. This is a good way to learn and practice the various steps involved in the quilting process. And, as an added bonus, you could win enough blocks to make a whole quilt. Check out the Block of the Month page.
Block Exchanges – are often held at events involving several Guilds. Each person attending completes a block to exchange with another participant or enter in a draw for some or all of the blocks. Usually the block pattern or theme is provided but sometimes the choice of pattern is left entirely up to each quilter.
Community Projects – those Guild members that are interested make baby quilts, placemats and other quilts for distribution to various organizations. These have included placemats for Meals on Wheels, lap quilts for Yucalta Lodge, quilts for the R.C.M.P. Highway Patrol, the Salvation Army, and wherever there is a need in the community. Once or twice a year we have a community project blitz, usually on a Saturday. Check out the Community Project page.
Door Prizes – on A-Night, members can contribute fifty cents to a draw. The winner receives the prize of quilt related items, which has been purchased with the money raised the previous month. The winner is responsible for purchasing the next month’s prize.
Fat Quarter – is a piece of fabric that has been cut measuring 1⁄4 yard or meter – measuring approximately 18” x 22”. Members attending Guild events such as our Christmas Party or Hands Across the Water often exchange fat quarters.
Guild Workshops – during the course of the year, workshops are held for our members at a cost of a $25.00 fee. They are held at the Masonic Hall on Saturdays from 10 a.m. til 4 p.m. Those attending contribute to a potluck lunch. Workshops are planned for the year in September and sign up sheets are available at A-Night meetings. Check out the Workshops page.
Hands Across the Water – this is a yearly, one-day event with many Guilds attending including Quadra Island, Campbell River, Courtenay, Powell River, Sunshine Coast and Denman Island. This social day includes lunch, show-and-tell and a merchant’s mall. This event is hosted on a rotating basis.
Merchant’s Mall – at events such as quilt shows, merchants are invited to attend. They set up booths of their wares for sale – fabric, patterns, notions etc. This is an added dimension to the event and enables us to shop during the event.
Mini Workshops – these are approximately half-hour demos, given on B-Nights, of various aspects of quilting. They are facilitated by Guild members and help to teach new members the basics of various quilting techniques. They also help all members to learn new techniques and processes.
President’s Fabric Run – this one-day event is held once a year, usually in the spring. Our Guild President organizes a one-day shopping trip to quilt shops on Vancouver Island. We meet at the Sportsplex early in the morning and travel together. Passengers make a donation towards the cost of gas. We visit three or four quilt shops, stopping for lunch and perhaps dinner along the way. All Guild members are welcome to attend. Sign-up sheets are circulated at A and B-Night meetings.
Quilt Shows – a quilt show is usually a three-day weekend event, which is open to the public displaying the quilts and quilted items made by Guild members. All members are encouraged to display their work and become involved with the process of the event. See the Quilt Show page.
Quilt Walk – prior to and during a quilt show, quilts have been hung in windows of stores in the downtown area for a two-week period to promote our shows. Maps are available.
Retreats – the Guild rents the Oyster Bay Resort for a three day retreat twice year. Start time is early Friday morning and end time is 5 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Quilters bring their own quilting projects, sewing machines and all sewing paraphernalia. We share the cooking and dinners are sometimes at a restaurant. This is a social event and is a great way to get to know other Guild members. Check out the Retreat page.
Round Robins – at events such as Hands Across the Water, quilters can sign up to participate in this fun challenge. Each person makes a first block of a quilt, which when completed is theirs. They send this block along to the next person on the list with comments about what they envision their quilt to be and possibly add some theme fabric. The next person adds a second block/row to the original block. The quilt in progress continues in this way until it has gone to all the members on the list. Participants have one month to complete their contribution before sending it on. In this way, each person will have contributed a block/row to each of the quilts
being made. Finally, each participant will receive back the quilt that they started.
Show and Tell – at every A-Night meeting, we encourage all of our members to participate by sharing their finished projects with everyone. Photos are taken and kept in the Guild albums.
